Yesterday I watched the Tim O'Reilly interview with Shai Agassi of better place, and their plan of building the infracstructure for electric vehicles. Much of what he said on the potential success comes down to charging and switching batteries as well. Might be interesting if you haven't yet seen it: http://www.betterplace.com/press-room/videos-detail/web-20-summit-08-john-battelle-speaks-with-shai-agassi/

Peter, I don't know about that particular case, but yes, what I've understood, it has been practiced among device manufacturers. Good thing is that it gives more granularity to visualize lower energy levels, but bad thing is that it messes up the mental model for the user.

Tina, I can't access that page. I've read something about wireless energy transfer, though. Most of the solutions are not really productized yet for mass markets, but there was one product, a close range wireless charger table, that worked well together with older Nokia phones. It's really cool, it enables one form of accidental charging: you just leave your phone on the restaurant table or work desk and it charges.

Maybe it's apocryphal, but I seem to remember reading an engineer from Danger talking about the development of their battery life indicator. They put lots of energy into making the battery indicator for the Sidekick the most accurate it could be, only to have T-Mobile shoot it down. Apparently T-Mobile made them show a full charge until it was actually at 50% charge and then show 25% remaining from then on.
